Program Administrator – WISE Kid-netic Energy Program

The Organization

As the oldest engineering school in Western Canada and home to nearly 20 unique programs of study across multiple engineering disciplines, the University of Manitoba’s Price Faculty of Engineering is a premier centre of engineering research and education in the prairies.  Established in 1990, WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Kid-Netic Energy is an outreach program from the University of Manitoba dedicated to increasing youth participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.  Annually we engage over 30,000 youth throughout Manitoba through in-school workshops, summer camps, extracurricular clubs and special events.  One of our main focuses is reaching youth who may have additional barriers to STEM engagement, and we have developed a variety of programs specific to Girls, First Nations youth and youth in the inner city.  We are based in Winnipeg but our team travels extensively to deliver workshops and camps across Manitoba, reaching a number of First Nations and rural communities.

The Opportunity

The Price Faculty of Engineering has a unique opportunity available for a Program Administrator to help lead our team in WISE Kid-netic Energy in the development, planning and delivery of our outreach programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides support towards responsible overall operation and income budget for the unit.
  • Responsible for the development, testing, promotion and quality assurance of all program workshops and camp activities
  • Develops, adapts and tests all camp themes, activities and enrichment programs for different audiences.
  • Finds opportunities to highlight traditional Indigenous knowledge into camps, clubs, events and workshops.
  • Maintains the integrity and functionality of the outreach database; responsible for collecting workshop statistics, workshop booking details, camper information and camp statistics.
  • Manages, collects and provides data from all systems for strategic planning.
  • Manages supplies needed for outreach and spaces where supplies are stored.
  • Manages the training of all student employees
  • Develops and maintains a resource center with the best science, engineering and math references for the staff of WISE.
  • Meets with school administrators and community leaders in the province to promote WISE Kid-Netic Energy’s wide range of services for youth.
  • Updates and develops promotional materials for WISE Kid-Netic Energy camps, clubs, events and workshops.
  • Responsible for recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of all student staff that report to the Program Administrator

Selection Criteria:

  • University Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline is required, preferably Science, Engineering or Education.
  • Equivalent of 2 years of directly related administrative experience required.
  • Prior experience related to education of Manitoba youth required.
  • Experience, knowledge, and competency with Indigenous cultures, history, and community protocols required
  • Experience with administering budgets and producing financial statements for external funders is required.
  • Supervisory experience in leading and directing a team required.
  • Experience in outreach and recruitment, with an emphasis on children’s programs required.
  • Experience with program development, workshop facilitation and public speaking required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous values and cultures as well as challenges and opportunities that exist related to the education/development of Indigenous students is required
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate scientific principles to a wide variety of audiences is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to network effectively both within the University environment and within the corporate and education environments is required
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate Indigenous values into student programming is required.
