Work parties don’t have to be dull and uninteresting. While they may get that reputation, most people can and do have fun with the people they work with—usually. But if you’re celebrating a retirement or a promotion, there are a plethora of ways to make it a memorable occasion rather than something to dread and feel like you’re only there because you have to be.

If you are in charge of organizing the work party, approach it as you would any other party and you will be on the right track. If you have a specific theme in mind, that’s also a great place to start because you’ll have a lot of options. Consider the casino theme. You can have guests pay a fee for chips and then donate the money to a charity. This works well for a retirement party where the retiree can choose the charity. On the other hand, guests can pay for chips and then cash them in, just like in a real casino. And don’t worry, throwing a casino party is simple once you’ve rented the games. Choose your favorites or play the entire set; the choice is yours. Some companies will even allow you to’rent’ dealers and other ‘casino’ types to keep the party going.

Of course, it does not have to be a casino theme to be entertaining. There are tea parties, outdoor barbeques, game days, and parties centered on drinking wine and creating a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Another fun idea for a work party is to open it up to families and have a picnic or barbeque format with face painters, clowns, science shows, or a magician to keep the kids entertained while the adults play volleyball, soccer, or horseshoes nearby. There are plenty of food trucks to rent for the day, and if you add a bouncy house or two, you’ve got a party that everyone will remember for a long time.

In short, work parties don’t have to be stuffy speeches and stale cake in your boardroom. They can be as enjoyable as spending time with family or friends, and isn’t that what work people are? What about extended family and, for the most part, friends? So ditch the routine and go for the thrill!
